VARIE: Italian Language Proficiency Requirements for Non-EU Citizens Residing Abroad

CIRCULAR SETTING OUT THE PROCEDURES FOR THE ENTRY, RESIDENCE AND ENROLMENT OF INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS, AND FOR THE RECOGNITION OF THEIR QUALIFICATIONS, IN RELATION TO HIGHER EDUCATION PROGRAMMES IN ITALY

APPLICABLE TO THE 2026/2027 AND 2027/2028 ACADEMIC YEARS

Non-EU citizens residing abroad who apply for admission to a DiSSUF Bachelor’s or Master’s degree programme taught in Italian must demonstrate Italian language proficiency at CEFR level B2 or above, in accordance with the provisions issued by the Italian Ministry of Universities and Research (see page 12 of the above-mentioned Circular, including the applicable exemptions).

Applicants may demonstrate the required level of Italian language proficiency in one of the following ways:

  • by submitting a certificate attesting to CEFR level B2 or above, issued within the CLIQ quality framework (Certificazione Lingua Italiana di Qualità). CLIQ brings together the University for Foreigners of Perugia, the University for Foreigners of Siena, Roma Tre University and the Dante Alighieri Society;
  • by taking a CISIA ITA L2 test during the current calendar year (2026) and obtaining a score of at least 55 out of 72 (https://www.cisiaonline.it/altri-test/test-ita-l2). Both the @UNI and @CASA test formats are accepted, regardless of the Italian university administering the test.

Applicants who do not demonstrate Italian language proficiency at CEFR level B2 will not be admitted to their chosen degree programme. Consequently, their study visa pre-enrolment application submitted through the Universitaly portal will not be validated by the University.

The University also participates in several international projects under which places are reserved for specific categories of international students, including the “Marco Polo” Programme for Chinese citizens and the “Formed” Project for students from the Maghreb region. Under these projects, any assessment of Italian language proficiency is governed by the relevant protocols.
